Built on career data from 12 million workers, the inaugural Where You Work Matters list shows how leading employers design roles that enable real mobility

The inaugural Where You Work Matters list has launched, spotlighting how 1,750 major US employers are structuring roles and pathways that enable meaningful, sustained career progression.

Developed by the Schultz Family Foundation and the Burning Glass Institute, in partnership with Harvard Business School’s Project on Managing the Future of Work, the ranking is grounded in an unparalleled dataset: the observed career trajectories of more than 12 million American workers.

Nearly 55,000 occupations across these companies were analysed, marking the first time insights of this scale and granularity have been made publicly accessible – equipping senior leaders with evidence-based benchmarks to inform talent strategy and mobility investment.

Matt Sigelman, President of the Burning Glass Institute.

About the Where You Work Matters list

Of the 1,750 businesses evaluated, only 22 earned Platinum status – the highest designation – recognising sustained excellence in building careers.

These businesses were: Boeing, DocuSign, Fidelity Investments, Fisher Investments, General Motors, HubSpot, Jamf, Liberty Mutual Insurance, Lockheed Martin, MathWorks, Mayo Clinic, Northrop Grumman, Northwell Health, Philadelphia Insurance Companies, Procter & Gamble (P&G), Progressive, Qualcomm, Qualtrics, Stryker, Texas Instruments, Tyler Technologies and West Monroe.

Each achieved top marks across three dimensions central to enterprise talent strategy:

  • Early-career roles: Entry pathways that equip emerging talent with foundational skills, structured training, and clear advancement options within and beyond the organisation.
  • Growth roles: Positions with defined mobility and leadership pathways, reflecting a commitment to developing future leaders from within.
  • Stability roles: Roles characterised by strong pay and high retention, providing a reliable, sustainable foundation for long-term careers.

For senior leaders, the Platinum cohort offers a practical benchmark for designing pipelines, accelerating internal mobility, and strengthening workforce stability.

ā€œThis initiative gives employers a clear picture of what ā€˜good’ looks like for each role,ā€ said Matt Sigelman, President of the Burning Glass Institute. ā€œThat insight can help companies strengthen career pathways and design jobs that create greater opportunity.ā€
