A landmark deal between the Trump Organization and Altus Property Group brings the world's pre-eminent luxury hotel brand to the Australian market

The Trump Organization has announced its first official project in Australia, a 340-metre luxury skyscraper designed to bring "the prestige and allure of a world-class luxury brand" to the Gold Coast.

The 91-storey Trump International Hotel & Tower is expected to cost at least US$1.5bn. The development will feature 285 hotel rooms and 272 luxury residential apartments, along with an exclusive beach club.

Eric Trump, the Trump Organization’s EVP, described the venture as a significant addition to the firm's global portfolio.

Construction is set to commence in August, marking a new chapter in Queensland’s high-end property market.

Signed agreement for landmark tower

Altus chief executive David Young signed the agreement at Mar-a-Lago, Florida, on February 14.

"We are now deeply into a process of design, engineering, construction and fit-out that will cost a shade under US$1.5bn and bring the world's pre-eminent hotel-resort brand to our shores," he said.

David said that the tower would be "Australia's tallest building before the end of the decade". The development is situated at a prime Surfers Paradise location that has remained vacant for over 10 years. Apartments are projected to start at US$5m, targeting the highest tier of the international luxury market.

Private conglomerate’s evolution and growth

The Trump Organization began as a family-run construction business in New York in 1923, founded by Elizabeth Trump and her son Fred.

After Donald Trump took the helm in 1971, he transitioned the company toward high-stakes Manhattan real estate and global luxury licensing.

Today, the conglomerate maintains interests in hospitality, residential towers and golf courses across the Middle East, Asia and Europe.

Despite criticism regarding the President’s continued influence, the firm has pledged to maintain a clear separation between business management and the executive office, focusing on landmark international developments that leverage the Trump name as a symbol of elite property standards.

Design manual follows global standards

The Gold Coast tower will adhere to a specific "Trump design manual" currently being applied to similar projects in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

"The modern Trump package is high-end design and fit-outs, with a premium feel," said David, who addressed what he said are "misconceptions" about the brand’s style, saying that modern fit-outs prioritised high-end aesthetics over the "gaudy gold-plated" fixtures seen in archive footage from previous decades.

The design incorporates a six-star resort experience and high-end retail brands on the lower floors. This consistent global design standard is intended to ensure the brand's premium status remains uniform across international borders.

Council meeting confirms operational confidence

Local officials have expressed support for the economic impact of the multi-billion-dollar investment. A Gold Coast Council spokesperson confirmed that Mayor Tom Tate met with the Trump Organization on February 13 to discuss the project

Acting Mayor Mark Hammel said that the new application would be reviewed for its potential to generate jobs. "We welcome investment in the city. It shows confidence in our city and ultimately creates jobs," he said.

The site, sold for US$56m in 2019, already has approval for an 89-storey tower, although the new Trump-branded proposal will require fresh formal documentation.

Prestige allure of world-class brands

The project signals a potential injection of capital into the Queensland construction sector.

David said that the tower would leave other Australian resorts "in its wake" regarding luxury standards. Eric Trump reiterated that the tower would provide an unmatched level of prestige to the Gold Coast beachfront.

Despite competition from a proposed 393-metre twin-tower project nearby, the Trump Organization remains confident that its brand allure will secure its position as a market leader.
