Hamad Al-Khater takes the helm at Qatar Airways, leading the carrier into its next phase of strategic growth, operational excellence and global innovation

Qatar Airways Group has announced the appointment of Hamad Ali Al-Khater as Group CEO, succeeding Badr Mohammed Al Meer.

Effective 7 December, Hamad joins from his role as Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport where he was responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of airport operations.

This involved strategic direction, operational excellence, infrastructure expansion and continuous enhancement of passenger experience.

Before this, he held senior roles across Qatar energy, where Qatar Airways says he drove business development, deal execution and leading large-scale strategic and operational initiatives.

Discussing the leadership change, the airline's Board of Directors Chairman Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said: “Qatar Airways Group extends its appreciation to Badr Mohammed Al-Meer for his service.

“As we welcome Mr. Hamad Ali Al-Khater, we look forward to building on the strong foundations and expansive global network of Qatar Airways, anchored by our exceptional team in Qatar and around the world.”

He added: “With this leadership transition, Qatar Airways Group reaffirms its commitment to delivering world-class experiences, reliability and innovation to travellers around the globe.”

Former CEO’s strategy

Badr, who had led Qatar Airways since November 2023, set out a vision aimed at elevating the airline’s global standing through innovation, premium service and technological transformation.

Upon his appointment, according to Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority, he said “this is the new era” for the airline, emphasising growth and excellence.

A central component of Badr’s strategy was product innovation. He spearheaded the development of a new First Class cabin, designed to merge the comfort of a private jet with the scale of a commercial airline.

In an interview with CNBC in March 2024 he said: “We want to combine the experience from flying commercial and flying on private jet and develop something new which is the first class cabin.”

Alongside this, Qatar Airways introduced the Qsuite Next Gen, enhancing privacy, comfort and in-flight entertainment for solo and group travellers.

According to the airline, these moves were intended to strengthen Qatar Airways’ reputation as a global leader in premium air travel.

The former CEO also prioritised expanding the airline’s global reach, targeting growth markets such as China and India. His tenure also included the launch of new routes and seasonal service resumption, alongside plans for major aircraft orders with Airbus and Boeing.

Badr underscored the importance of employees as a strategic asset, promoting leadership development and workforce engagement programmes.

Strategic partnerships across Africa, India and other regions were cultivated to support Qatar Airways’ growth, innovation and operational reach, according to the firm.

During Badr’s leadership, Qatar Airways achieved record financial performance, reflecting the success of his strategic initiatives.

At the same time, in an interview in March 2025 with the Financial Times, he signalled that its breakneck growth would eventually give way to a more measured approach to ensure long-term sustainability and maintain high standards of service.

Hamad's focus will be on operational excellence, hub efficiency and sustainable expansion while building on the innovations introduced under Badr.
