McKinsey Insights Set Agenda for CXO Summit Leaders

Why leadership has got harder
According to McKinsey, today's CEO carries considerably more on their plate than a decade ago.
The firm notes that "ten years ago, CEOs and top teams typically focused on four or five critical issues at any one point in time", whereas now "the number is double that".
Strategy used to mean picking a direction and holding it, but that is not much use to a CEO juggling eight live issues instead of four.
McKinsey's panel takes this as its premise, looking at how leaders keep priorities in some kind of order when none of them are willing to wait their turn.
McKinsey and London Business School have both drawn up shortlists of what separates strong leaders from the rest: positivity, empathy, support, resilience, curiosity, levity.
Flexibility isn't on either list, but McKinsey singles it out separately as the trait leaders need most. If you factor in slack for staff wellbeing, cashflow pressure and sudden market shifts, there is more room to manoeuvre when volatility actually hits.
