Despite CEO Tim Cook playing down rumours of retirement, a Bloomberg report says VP of Hardware John Ternus is a leading contender to replace him

In some respects, Tim Cook only has himself to blame.

Apple’s CEO, who has held the role since 2011, was asked by host Kara Swisher on a 2021 Sway podcast if he would still be at the tech firm in a decade.

He replied: ā€œTen more years? Probably not. But I can tell you that I feel great right now and the date is not in sight.ā€

Post interview, speculation built around Tim’s possible exit from the company – with analysts pitching 2026 to 2031 as a possible transition window – and the succession planning that would be necessary to ensure a smooth change of leadership at one of the world’s biggest companies.

Tim has since played down retirement rumours, despite reaching the traditional US retirement age of 65 in November 2025 and a slew of exec departures and reshuffling at Apple late in the same year.

However, a 22 March report by Bloomberg puts Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus – a name that has been at the forefront of succession planning talks to date – in contention for the CEO role

Succession, or not, at Apple

As recently as March 2026, Tim said in a Good Morning America interview ā€œI can’t imagine life without Appleā€, characterising speculation of his retirement as rumours by saying ā€œNo, I didn’t say that. I haven’t said that [I am retiring].ā€

Bloomberg has led speculation about John as the leading candidate to replace Tim. In September 2025, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman identified John as being in the running, suggesting he will ā€œprobably become Apple’s Executive Chairmanā€.

He said that John, who has has led Apple’s hardware division since 2021, has ā€œemerged as a key decision-maker on product road maps, features and strategies, extending his influence beyond the traditional scope of a hardware engineering chiefā€.

According to Mark, John’s contributions to innovation – including the transition to Apple Silicon and the engineering of flagship devices like the iPhone and Mac – highlight his critical role in shaping Apple’s product strategy

Leadership reshuffle

In late 2025, Apple underwent its most significant executive reshuffle in decades, marked by a wave of high-profile departures across its AI, design and legal departments.

Key exits included AI chief John Giannandrea, who moved into an advisory role ahead of his 2026 retirement, and long-time head of user interface design Alan Dye, who left for Meta.

Additionally, veteran General Counsel Kate Adams and Environmental VP Lisa Jackson announced their plans to retire, signaling a major generational shift within Tim Cook’s inner circle.

To fill these gaps, Apple recruited external talent and promoted from within to streamline operations.

Former Meta lawyer Jennifer Newstead was named as the successor to Adams, eventually overseeing a newly combined Legal and Government Affairs organisation.

In the critical AI sector, Apple hired former Microsoft executive Amar Subramanya as VP of AI.

This reorganisation suggests a push to integrate AI more deeply into Apple’s core software while consolidating policy and environmental efforts under Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan.
