Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, is leading executive reshuffles at the tech firm
Apple has seen major leadership movements across its teams in December, resulting in major changes across government affairs, AI and design

Leadership changes and transitions at Apple are moving beyond just succession planning for Tim Cook's replacement, with a surge of transitions across AI, design, legal and financial divisions.

Among the latest senior execs announced to be leaving the tech company is Lisa Jackson, Vice President for Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, who Apple says will retire in late January 2026.

Discussing her departure, CEO Tim Cook said in a statement on 4 December: “I am deeply appreciative of Lisa’s contributions. She has been instrumental in helping us reduce our global greenhouse emissions by more than 60% compared to 2015 levels.

“She has been a critical strategic partner in engaging governments around the world, advocating for the best interests of our users on a myriad of topics, as well as advancing our values, from education and accessibility to privacy and security.”

Alongside this, the firm also announced that Jennifer Newstead, Meta’s top lawyer, will become Apple’s general counsel on 1 March 2026, following the decision that duties will be transitioned from Kate Adams, who has served in the role since 2017.

Tim added: “Kate has been an integral part of the company for the better part of a decade, having provided critical advice while always advocating on behalf of our customers’ right to privacy and protecting Apple’s right to innovate.”

The Government Affairs organisation will transition to Kate, who will oversee the team until her retirement next year, then it will be handed to Jennifer whose title will become Senior Vice President of General Counsel and Government Affairs.

Apple says the Environment and Social Initiatives teams will report to Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan.

AI reshuffle

Apple is also navigating a leadership transition within its AI division. John Giannandrea, Senior Vice President for Machine Learning and AI Strategy, is stepping down from his position.

Announced at the start of December, he will transition into an advisory role before his planned retirement in spring of 2026 in order to manage effective succession and continuity for Apple’s advancing AI initiatives.

The tech giant has confirmed that Amar Subramanya will join as its new Vice President of AI, reporting to Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering.

Discussing the transition, Tim said: “We are thankful for the role John played in building and advancing our AI work, helping Apple continue to innovate and enrich the lives of our users.

“AI has long been central to Apple’s strategy, and we are pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team and to bring his extraordinary expertise to Apple.”

This change is prompting a wider reorganisation, with the remaining members of John’s former team moving under the leadership of Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue - who oversee operations and services retrospectively.

Design team moves

Alan Dye, the Head of User Interface Design since 2015, also left at the start of December to join Meta.

Under the leadership of Mark Zuckerberg, Meta is creating a new design studio and putting him in charge of design for hardware, software and AI integration for its interfaces, Bloomberg reports.

Apple is replacing him with designer Stephen Lemay. In a statement provided to Bloomberg, Tim said Steve Lemay has “played a key role in the design of every major Apple interface since 1999” and has “always set an extraordinarily high bar for excellence and embodies Apple’s culture of collaboration and creativity”.

Billy Sorrentino, another Senior Design Director, has chosen to leave Apple, sharing in a post on LinkedIn on 5 December that he’s “had the best job in the world for nearly a decade”.

“From the world’s most popular camera in iPhone,” he added, “to launching Vision Pro, this year’s Liquid Glass redesign, it’s been the most meaningful creative chapter of my life.”

According to his LinkedIn, Billy has started his new role as Vice President of Product Design with immediate effect.

With Apple’s next generation of leaders entering the C-suite and senior teams, the company has positioned itself for its biggest executive reshuffle since Founder Steve Jobs was at the helm.
