Why Mercedes CEO Ola Kaellenius Loves the New S-Class

Redefining the world’s best-selling luxury saloon is no easy task. Doing it to coincide with the 140-year anniversary of your founding father inventing the automobile takes the pressure to deliver up another notch.
Fortunately, with the S-Class, the team of designers and engineers at Mercedes-Benz have a legacy of engineering excellence and craftsmanship to draw on.
On 29 January, the German brand unveiled the latest iteration of its class-leading and flagship model, delivering an extensive next-generation update that sees more than 50% of the car – around 2,700 components – newly developed or re-engineered.
The S-Class combines Mercedes-Benz’s pioneering approach to design with state-of-the-art technology including a newly developed supercomputer that powers driving and parking assistance systems and immersive, personalised passenger experiences.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, CEO Ola Kaellenius is a fan. Describing the new model in a LinkedIn post, he says: “When the S-Class makes an entrance, it does not merely arrive; it boldly proclaims its presence.
“For decades, the S-Class has set the benchmark for engineering, comfort and safety. With this new chapter, its legacy only grows.”
A Mercedes-Benz refined in every detail
The new S-Class was launched on 29 January at the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, where exhibits and more than 160 vehicles throughout history tell the story of the German Brand.
Discussing the event, Ola says: “One can scarcely deny that the excitement in the town over the debut of the new S-Class has reached fever pitch. Rare indeed is the evening that leaves society quite so breathless as this world premiere.
“And although tonight’s gowns and dances may not rival the fictitious grand spectacles of 19th-century London high society, the S-Class festivities in the Mercedes-Benz Museum were undeniably exhilarating. So, while many celebrated today’s release of the new season of Bridgerton – which, by the way, inspired my slightly dramatic intro, if you hadn’t already noticed – we had other, better, plans.
He adds: “An icon demands nothing less. Refined in every detail, this latest iteration deserves a closer look.”
The CEO’s highlights
Considering the latest evolution of Mercedes’ flagship model, Ola points to several “personal highlights”, including the new vehicle's use of advanced lighting as a design feature.
The S-Class features for the first time an illuminated grille, accented with three-dimensional chrome stars and a self-illuminated upright Mercedes star – part of “the S-Class light signature”, according to the brand.
“Personalisation also reaches a new level with MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure: over 150 exterior colours and more than 400 interior colours are offered,” Ola says.
Mercedes’ MANUFAKTUR programme delivers personalisation to customers, including exclusive paint finishes, luxurious leather packages and handcrafted, bespoke details.
Through MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure, Mercedes customers liaise directly with company experts through a personalised consultation at the company’s Center of Excellence in Sindelfinger, or at a location of the customer’s choice.
Blending technology with tradition
Blending technology with tradition, Mercedes-Benz has also placed a renewed focus on intelligence beneath the bonnet.
At the heart of the new S-Class is the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, a purpose-built digital platform designed to connect every major function of the vehicle into one seamless ecosystem.
This next-generation supercomputer underpins everything from driving performance to infotainment, enabling faster processing and a more integrated experience for both driver and passengers.
Crucially, it also allows the S-Class to remain digitally current throughout its lifecycle, with over-the-air updates keeping features fresh long after customers leave the showroom.
“Of course, the S-Class is more than its impressive looks — it continues to set the standards in technology and safety. An enhanced adaptive restraint system with PRE-SAFE® Impulse belt pretensioners and up to 15 airbags reinforces its leadership,” Ola says.
“MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO supports seamless, point-to-point driving even in dense urban traffic. And like the CLA and GLC, the S-Class runs on MB.OS, connecting every system into one intelligent ecosystem.”
The new model’s assistance systems are equally ambitious. Mercedes’ MB.DRIVE suite combines high-performance computing with an array of cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors to support smoother driving, automated lane changes and advanced collision avoidance.
Parking is also made simpler, with improved recognition of spaces and the ability to retrace reversing paths in tight conditions.
Inside, the fourth generation of Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment introduces a more conversational, personalised virtual assistant, bringing generative AI into the cabin.
With intuitive navigation, customisable displays and access to an expanding portfolio of apps, the S-Class continues to evolve as both a luxury saloon and a digital companion for modern leadership.
“These highlights underscore our continued commitment to building the world’s most desirable cars. For decades, the S-Class has set the benchmark for engineering, comfort and safety. With this new chapter, its legacy only grows.,” Ola says.
