The Meta CEO openly favours a flat leadership structure in his innovation lab, encouraging collaboration and competition across revolutionary AI teams

While many multi-billion dollar companies are organised by deadlines, timeframes and strategic visions from the C-Suite down, Meta has been geared to take a slightly different approach.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO, said recently on the State of AI podcast with Rowan Cheung that the organisational setup of his Superintelligence Labs has a ā€œvery flatā€ leadership structure, pointing out how it looks very different from the rest of corporate America.

He described the way the AI experts at the TBD Lab, the core team at Meta Superintelligence Labs, work as more of a ā€œgroup science projectā€. Instead of layers of bureaucracy, they work more closely together in a flattened structure that enables greater innovation.

ā€œIt’s research - you don’t know how long the thing is going to takeā€, he said on the podcast, adding that ā€œeveryone’s competitive. They all want to be at the frontier and doing leading work. Me setting a deadline isn’t going to help.ā€

What are the benefits for business and leaders?

The Meta boss has said that he sees AI as the future of the company, meaning that he is closely involved with the team which consists of some of the AI-world’s top talent.

Adopting a flat leadership structure means that Meta can attract top AI talent into a more open and innovative environment where they receive direct visibility, rather than being buried under layers of bureaucracy and leaders.

Meta has already taken talent from OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Anthropic, according to Fortune, including Rishabh Agarwal who joined in April from Google DeepMind.

In a post on X at the time Rishabh said: ā€œI felt the pull to take on a different kind of risk.ā€

The flattened leadership style also encourages collaboration throughout the team. Mark compared the TBD Lab, which reportedly has close to 50 team members, to a boat and said: ā€œIf someone isn’t pulling their weight on that, it has this huge negative effect, in a way that it doesn’t for a lot of other parts of the company.ā€

In addition, a direct line up to the CEO means that the AI teams can more clearly see the leadership’s overarching vision.

The bigger AI picture

In June, Meta poured US$14.3bn into the development of its Superintelligence Labs, which is led by Alexandr Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer and founder of ScaleAI.

Meta says that the group’s mission is to help develop AI that surpasses human intelligence in every aspect.

In August, Meta froze hiring for its AI division as it restructured its AI teams - a move led by 28-year-old Alexandr.

The restructuring split the AI employees into four teams: the core TBD Lab team made up of newly hired experts, and teams for AI products, infrastructure and longer-term projects.

Alexandr circulated a memo in August, in which he said ā€œSuperintelligence is coming" and emphasised the need to organise around research, product and infrastructure.

In a July note on Meta.com, Mark outlined the the potential potential for superintelligence in more detail, saying: ā€œMeta’s vision is to bring personal superintelligence to everyone. We believe in putting this power in people’s hands to direct it towards what they value in their own lives.ā€

He added: ā€œIt seems clear that in the coming years, AI will improve all our existing systems and enable the creation and discovery of new things that aren’t imaginable today.

ā€œMeta believes strongly in building personal superintelligence that empowers everyone. We have the resources and the expertise to build the massive infrastructure required, and the capability and will to deliver new technology to billions of people across our products. I'm excited to focus Meta's efforts towards building this future."
