How is John Furner Preparing for Day One as Walmart CEO?

John Furner, currently the CEO of Walmart US, is set to take over as the President and CEO of Walmart on 1 February, transitioning the company into a new era defined by AI-led transformation, continuing people-led and tech powered strategies, with a focus on operational efficiency.
Johnâs appointment follows Doug McMillonâs successful tenure of over a decade. His strategy has involved transforming the traditional retailer into a âpeople-led, tech-poweredâ omnichannel powerhouse.
His approach has focused on blending physical store dominance with a robust e-commerce, advertising and membership ecosystem, resulting in a more than 300% increase in stock price during his tenure.
Stepping into the top seat, John is introducing a new bench of leaders to join alongside him at the start of the month. Walmart says they are “deeply grounded in the company’s purpose and values, and have the vision and experience to guide our next chapter”.
Discussing these changes in a company statement, John said: “Over my 32 years with Walmart, I’ve seen that our people are the greatest competitive advantage. These internal promotions reflect our culture of opportunity and the depth of our leadership bench.
“These leadership changes also mark a key step in how we organise for the future."
Even the best teams need the right structure to win.
The CEO added: âAs AI rapidly reshapes retail, we are centralising our platforms to accelerate shared capabilities, freeing up our operating segments to be more focused on and closer to our customers and members.â
A new leadership team focused on the customer
Among these execs is Seth Dallaire, current Executive Vice President and Chief Growth Officer for Walmart US, who is being named EVP and CGO for Walmart.
This move aims to grow global enterprise platforms, including digital advertising, Walmart+, Walmart Data Ventures, Vizio, Samâs Club MAP, as well as a global Marketplace platform.
The company says he is well equipped to take on this role as âDallaire and his team have helped Walmart US expand beyond traditional retail, building new revenue streams enhancing customer valueâ.
Replacing John in his current role is current EVP and Chief eCommerce Officer for Walmart US David Guggina.
According to the firm, under David’s leadership Walmart has built industry-leading delivery capabilities that serve 95% of US households in under three hours.
His background in e-Commerce and supply chain operations positions him to drive one of US’ most successful retail stores.
Continuing the success of its membership club
Sam’s Club is Walmart’s third largest segment behind Walmart US and Walmart International, bringing in US$86bn in fiscal year 2025.
As a membership-based warehouse club selling a wide variety of products in bulk at wholesale price, it focuses on savings for members through a curated selection of quality items, including fresh food and home goods.
Its current CEO Chris Nicholas will succeed Kath McLay as President and CEO of Walmart International. With experience as Chief Operating Officer for Walmart US and Chief Financial Officer for both US and International segments, the firm says heâs a âproven operatorâ.
Stepping into Chrisâ previous role is Latriece Watkins, who, starting her career in 1997 as an intern at the company, has driven operational excellence and ensured a consistent and trusted shopping experience in her current role as Chief Merchandising Officer.
Welcoming the new leader
Discussing Johnâs appointment at the time of the announcement in November 2025, Greg Penner, Chairman of Walmart Inc. said: âJohn Furner is the right leader to guide Walmart into the next chapter of growth and transformation.
âAfter starting hourly associates and being with us for over 30 years in a variety of leadership roles across all three of our operating segments, John understands every dimension of our business, from the sales floor to global strategy.â
He added that during John’s six year leadership of Walmart US, he has led significant change marked by digital transformation, positioning Walmart for “continued success”.
The announced leadership changes put Walmart’s “people led, tech powered” approach into action, enabling the company’s next phase of retail transformation.
