Long-time President & COO of Nintendo of America Doug Bowser will retire at the end of the year, leaving a lasting and impactful legacy

Doug Bowser marks over a decade with Nintendo of America by confirming his plan to retire at the end of 2025. Devon Pritchard, currently Executive Vice President of Revenue, Marketing & Consumer Experience, will step into the role of President from the beginning of 2026.

Doug Bowser joined Nintendo more than 10 years ago, his appointment garnering widespread attention not only due to his executive background experience but also because of his surname, matching that of one of Nintendo’s most recognised game characters.

The happy coincidence resonated with fans and became an immediate talking point in the gaming community.

Over his decade with Nintendo of America, Doug has led the organisation through several successes, including major platform and product launches and expansion beyond just video games.

Now Dough has announced his plans to retire from the gaming giant, effective 31 December 2025.

A tenure aligned with commercial resurgence

At the end of the year Doug will leave a significant legacy at Nintendo across its major titles and platforms, most notably the Nintendo Switch.

First released in 2017, the Switch marked a turning point for the business, following underwhelming performance from its predecessor, the Wii U.

The hybrid portable and home console design allowed the device to reach multiple market segments, distinguishing it from rivals.

At the time of the Switch’s launch, industry dominance by Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One raised questions about Nintendo’s position in the console market.

However, the commercial performance of the Switch helped reposition the company and reassert its relevance in the sector.

Doug has also overseen diversification beyond games. Under his leadership, Nintendo has explored new business areas, including film and theme parks – extensions of the brand that have created additional revenue sources and broader consumer reach.

“Leading Nintendo of America has been the honour of a lifetime,” says Doug. “I am proud of what our team has accomplished in both business results and the experiences we've created for consumers.”

Continuity expected as Pritchard prepares for top role

Devon Pritchard, a Nintendo veteran of 19 years, is set to become the next President of Nintendo of America.

She currently holds a senior executive role responsible for revenue, marketing and consumer experience and has previously served in various strategic and operational functions across the business.

Her appointment aligns with a continuity-focused transition, reflecting Nintendo’s approach to leadership development from within.

In her time at the company, Devon has worked across marketing, business affairs and publisher relations, giving her exposure to both creative and commercial aspects of Nintendo's model.

“My focus will be continuing to build on Nintendo's legacy of surprising and delighting our long-time fans, while at the same time welcoming new players into the Nintendo family,” Devon says.

In addition to Devon's appointment, Satoru Shibata will join Nintendo of America as Chief Executive Officer. He continues to hold his responsibilities within Nintendo Japan, reflecting a cross-regional leadership structure aimed at integration.

Market momentum builds around Switch 2 launch

The timing of the transition aligns with Nintendo’s current market position following the release of the Switch 2, a follow-up to the highly successful Switch console.

Early performance indicators suggest the platform maintains Nintendo’s presence in the hybrid portable console segment.

Maintaining this momentum will be a priority for Devon. Her experience across key business units suggests a degree of strategic consistency is expected.

The company’s President, Shuntaro Furukawa, has celebrated both Doug’s contributions and Devon’s readiness.

“During his tenure, Doug made numerous contributions to bring smiles to the faces of people connected to Nintendo,” Shuntaro says.

“Devon, who will become the next President, has also made many contributions to Nintendo over the years.”

Nintendo continues to pursue expansion of its intellectual property into wider entertainment formats. This includes adaptations and partnerships that reach audiences outside traditional gaming.

This direction aligns with Doug’s previous initiatives and is likely to remain in focus under Devon’s leadership.

The company maintains an integrated hardware and software model, setting it apart from businesses focused solely on one of those areas.

With more than 5.9bn video games and 860m hardware units sold worldwide, Nintendo’s franchises extend well beyond gaming, serving as long-term assets across entertainment platforms.
