CEO Ola Källenius Unveils Mercedes's Grand Limousine EV

When it comes to product launches, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius is having a good run.
Only last month Ola, who has led the company for nearly seven years, was introducing the world to the latest iteration of the German brand’s luxury S-Class Saloon – a combination, he said, of style and innovation that “deserves a closer look”.
Now it’s the turn of the all-new VLE, the first vehicle to be built on Mercedes’ new VAN.EA (Van Electric Architecture) platform, a digital multi-purpose design that will underpin a number of different electric commercial vehicles.
In typical Mercedes fashion, though, it’s not any ordinary van. Rather, says Ola, the VLE is “not entirely a new model, but creates a new segment we like to call: Grand Limousine.
“The all-new VLE brings together the best of both worlds: the driving comfort and handling of a limousine, paired with the spaciousness, versatility and flexibility of an MPV. What more could one ask for?”
When vans meet limousines
The answer to Ola’s question: a lot. Beyond cleverly combining a limo with a van, the VLE ups the stakes in range, comfort, digital technology and space – according to the CEO you can, should you ever find the need, fit the entire Mercedes-Benz board into one vehicle.
The foundation for this level of design is VAN.EA, a modular, electric-first platform designed to be the single blueprint for every future Mercedes van, from luxury MPVs to commercial workhorses.
By moving to one scalable backbone, the company has slashed production complexity by 50% while integrating high-end tech like an 800-volt system.
It’s essentially the digital and physical foundation that allows the VLE to offer a massive 435-mile range and ultra-fast charging without the usual van compromises.
And VLE is no usual van. Inside, the vehicle has space for eight people, is built for comfort and ease of operation, and is “digital native” – combining all-glass displays and optional MBUX superscreens that provide driving information and personalised entertainment systems.
Outside, innovative rear-axle steering gives greater control and handling capabilities while new 800-volt technology and high–performance charging systems give a range of more than 400 miles on a single charge.
Range, personalisation and digital tech
Unsurprisingly, Ola is a big fan. Discussing these capabilities on LinkedIn, he says: “Think exceptional range – more than 700 kilometres – benchmark efficiency and high-performance charging.
“What if someone asked for a cinema on wheels? Done. With a 31.1-inch panoramic screen in stunning 8K resolution, the experience comes pretty close to the real thing, if you ask me.”
That ‘cinema’ includes an interior space designed by Mercedes to give a “welcome home” feeling appropriate for a grand limousine.
The VLE comes with a furniture-inspired cabin design with a flexible and movable seating concept that allows its owners to shift between five and eight seat combinations and numerous configurations.
“Need a car for a big family? We’ve got you covered, with space for up to eight people. In fact, we could fit the entire Mercedes-Benz Board into one VLE. Maybe we’ll take one for our next board meeting. I’d happily volunteer for the rear seat because they are incredibly comfortable,” says Ola.
“And then there’s the design. The all-new VLE makes an instant impression with its new iconic grille and unmistakable light signature. Add to that the expansive Sky View panoramic roof, and you’ve got a real head-turner.”
On the efficiency front, the VLE 300 isn't just a high-performer; it’s a class leader.
Provisional figures put the combined energy consumption at 20.4-18.6 kWh/100 km, a considerable feat for a vehicle of this footprint. With 0 g/km of CO₂ emissions and a top-tier CO₂ Class A rating, it proves that "Grand Limousine" luxury and environmental responsibility can comfortably share the same lane.
“But I haven’t even told you my absolute favourite thing about the all-new VLE yet,” ends Ola.
“The attention to detail – and how we turn what was once considered impossible into reality. Just look at the two sliding doors with fully retractable windows.
“As you can tell, I already have plenty of ideas for how to use the VLE – and I’m sure you’ll come up with even more creative ones. I’m genuinely thrilled to welcome this incredible model, our first Grand Limousine, to our portfolio. Congratulations to everyone who brought it to life!”
