What Does Victor Peng's Appointment Mean for PsiQuantum?

The appointment of a computing industry veteran to lead PsiQuantum's transition from development to deployment could represent a significant milestone for C-suite executives monitoring quantum computing's commercial viability.
Victor Peng, former President of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), has been named interim CEO as the company begins large-scale implementation of quantum computing systems.
Co-founder Jeremy O'Brien transitions to Executive Chairman, where he will lead the Board of Directors and guide strategic direction and partnerships.
For business leaders evaluating when to invest in quantum-ready infrastructure, this shift from founder-led innovation to operational execution under proven industry leadership may provide important signals about technology maturation.
The leadership transition positions PsiQuantum with dual expertise as it searches for a permanent CEO. The broader leadership team includes Dr. Pete Shadbolt as Chief Scientific Officer, Prof. Terry Rudolph as Chief Architect and Prof. Mark Thompson as Chief Technologist.
Fault-tolerant systems reach production
Since 2015, PsiQuantum has developed technologies aimed at delivering fault-tolerant quantum computers – systems engineered to maintain operational integrity even when individual components fail.
The company produces Omega, its silicon photonic chipset that integrates optical circuits on silicon wafers designed for mass manufacturing.
PsiQuantum's current initiatives include advancing fault-tolerant algorithms, developing intermediate-scale test systems and establishing what it describes as the world's first utility-scale quantum computing sites in Brisbane, Australia and Chicago, Illinois.
"PsiQuantum was founded to realise the potential of quantum computing and the team has spent years doing the hard technical work to make that possible," says Jeremy. "As we shift into large-scale deployment and execution, Victor brings exactly the leadership we need."
Operational leadership and strategic execution
Victor assumes responsibility for day-to-day operations, shaping business, financial and operational strategies.
His remit includes advancing PsiQuantum's utility-scale quantum computing systems in Australia and Chicago, driving business growth and overseeing technical development across silicon photonics and other platforms.
His experience leading multi-billion-dollar companies and scaling complex technologies could prove valuable as quantum computing transitions from laboratory environments to industrial applications.
"PsiQuantum has done the hard work to establish a real foundation for utility-scale quantum computing," Victor explains. "The task ahead is execution. I'm excited to partner closely with them to help translate their mission into deployed systems that unlock this technology."
At AMD, Victor held responsibility for the Embedded and Data Centre GPU businesses and contributed to platform strategies integrating hardware, software and system-level architectures for emerging AI workloads.
Before AMD, he served as CEO of Xilinx, transforming it into a global leader in adaptive computing, culminating in AMD's £39bn ($49bn) acquisition in 2022.
