Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argues that rapidly advancing AI is testing economic, political and security institutions faster than they can adapt

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has written a 20,000 word blog post outlining that humanity is entering a "rite of passage, both turbulent and inevitable, which will tech who we are as a species".

In the post on his website, he says society is about to receive "almost unimaginable power, and it is deeply unclear whether our social, political and technological systems possess the maturity to wield it".

He defines "powerful AI" as models capable of surpassing human performance in fields including biology, mathematics, engineering and writing. These systems can give and take directions from humans and may even control robots, he argues.

Dario notes that such AI could arrive "as little as one to two years away", although he also acknowledges some uncertainty.

Indirect risks and unknown factors

Dario emphasises the challenges of indirect or unforeseen consequences, what he calls "unknown unknowns". Rapid advances in AI-driven science could accelerate medicine, biology and human enhancement, but he warns that "those would be big changes in what is possible, happening very quickly".

He adds: "They could be positive if responsibly done, but there is always a risk they go very wrong."

He also highlights potential societal risks, writing: "A world with billions of intelligences that are much smarter than humans at everything is going to be a very weird world to live in", pointing to concerns such as manipulation, addiction or changes to human purpose.

Ensuring AI aligns with human wellbeing, he notes, is critical to avoiding these outcomes.

Dario stresses that the question of human purpose is central: "Will humans be able to find purpose and meaning in such a world? We simply need to break the link between the generation of economic value and self-worth and meaning."

But that is a transition society has to make, and there is always the risk we don't handle it well.

Economic transformation

AI will reshape the labour market and wealth distribution, Dario argues, stressing that many jobs are vulnerable. "We may disrupt 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs over 1-5 years," he writes.

Dario adds: "Enterprises often have a choice between 'cost savings' (doing the same thing with fewer people) and 'innovation' (doing more with the same number of people), the market will inevitably produce both eventually, and any competitive AI company will have to serve some of both, but there may be some room to steer companies towards innovation when possible, and it may buy us some time.

"Anthropic is actively thinking about this."

Anthropic is exploring ways to support employees whose roles are disrupted, including mechanisms where humans could be compensated even after their traditional economic contribution ends.

Preparing for the future

Dario frames AI as a strategic challenge: "This is not just a technological challenge. It is a civilisational one." He advocates careful design, international coordination and regulatory frameworks.

He outlies that Anthropic's AI "constitution" for Claude is intended to align the system with human interests and prevent misuse.

Despite the risks, Dario is cautiously optimistic. He believes that with careful attention and planning, society can manage AI challenges: "I believe if we act decisively and carefully, the risks can be overcome - I would even say our odds are good. And there's a hugely better world on the other side of it."

Dario's essay outlines potential disruptions, economic effects and societal challenges, while also emphasising the role of responsible design, regulation and human judgement in shaping AI's impact.

For the CEO, the question is not whether AI will transform society, but whether humanity is ready to navigate that transformation.
